Cebu, Philippines Travel Guide: Beaches, Waterfalls and Where to Stay

admin • • 4 min read

Cebu has it all: white-sand islands, world-famous diving, waterfalls you can jump into, mountain viewpoints, centuries of history and some of the best lechon in the Philippines. It’s also one of the easiest places in the country to reach, thanks to direct international flights into Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Whether you’re planning a beach escape, an adventure trip or a family holiday, this guide will help you plan the perfect Cebu getaway.

When to visit Cebu

  • Dry season (roughly December to May): the most popular time, with sunnier days that are ideal for island hopping, diving and canyoneering.
  • January: the Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City, is one of the country’s biggest celebrations — book accommodation well ahead.
  • Wetter months (roughly July to October): fewer crowds and better prices, but more rain and a higher chance of storms. Keep plans flexible and check weather advisories.

Top things to do in Cebu

Explore historic Cebu City

Start at Magellan’s Cross and the neighbouring Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, two of the most important historic and religious sites in the Philippines. Add Fort San Pedro and a walk through the old downtown, then head up to the hills for city views at sunset.

Canyoneering and Kawasan Falls

In the south-west, the turquoise, multi-tiered Kawasan Falls in Badian is one of Cebu’s most photographed spots. Many visitors join a guided canyoneering tour that ends at the falls — expect jumping, swimming and scrambling through the river canyon.

Moalboal’s sardine run

Just off the shore at Moalboal, millions of sardines swirl in huge shoals close to the reef — you can snorkel with them straight from the beach. Sea turtles are also often spotted in the area. It’s roughly 2–3 hours by road from Cebu City.

Oslob and the whale sharks

Oslob, in the far south, is famous for whale shark encounters. It’s also debated: the sharks are fed by local operators to keep them close to shore, which some conservation groups criticise. Read up and decide what feels right for you — many travellers prefer seeing marine life in natural, unfed settings such as the sardine run in Moalboal.

Island escapes: Bantayan and Malapascua

In the north, Bantayan Island is known for powdery white beaches and a slow, laid-back pace. Nearby Malapascua is a favourite with divers hoping to see thresher sharks. Both require a road trip and a short boat ride from Cebu City, so plan to stay at least two nights.

Hike Osmeña Peak

At around 1,013 metres, Osmeña Peak is Cebu’s highest point. The hike is short but rewarding, with views over jagged green hills — a great sunrise trip and an easy add-on to a Kawasan Falls itinerary.

Eat your way through Cebu

Don’t leave without trying Cebu lechon — whole roasted pig with crispy, flavourful skin. Look out for “SuTuKil” seafood restaurants (from sugba, tula and kilaw: grilled, soup and ceviche-style), plus local street food favourites.

Where to stay

Area Best for
Mactan Island Beach resorts close to the airport, short stays and families
Cebu City History, food, shopping and a central base for day trips
Moalboal Snorkelling, diving, backpacker and mid-range stays
Bantayan & Malapascua Slow beach days, island life and diving

For villas and apartments, compare options on Agoda — especially strong across Asia — as well as Booking.com and Airbnb. Traveller reviews on Tripadvisor are helpful for choosing tours and restaurants.

Getting there and around

Most visitors arrive via Mactan-Cebu International Airport on Mactan Island, connected to Cebu City by bridges. Around the island, you can use ride-hailing apps and taxis in the city, buses for longer trips, or hire a private car with driver for day trips to the south — often the most comfortable option for families and groups. Travel times on Cebu’s roads can be long, so it pays to split your stay between two or three bases rather than doing everything as day trips.

Sample itinerary: 5 days in Cebu

  1. Day 1: Arrive, relax on Mactan Island, sunset dinner by the water.
  2. Day 2: Cebu City history tour and a lechon lunch.
  3. Day 3: Drive south; canyoneering to Kawasan Falls; overnight in Moalboal.
  4. Day 4: Snorkel with the sardines and turtles; optional sunrise at Osmeña Peak.
  5. Day 5: Return towards the airport, with a stop for pasalubong (local treats) on the way.

Practical tips

  • Carry some cash — smaller towns and islands may not accept cards.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag and water shoes for canyoneering and boat trips.
  • Check entry requirements and travel advice from your government before you go.
  • Book accommodation early for Sinulog, Holy Week and the Christmas holidays.

The bottom line

Cebu packs an incredible variety into one island province — history, adventure, marine life and beautiful beaches. Pick the right season, split your stay between a couple of bases and leave time to slow down, and you’ll see why so many travellers fall in love with the Queen City of the South.
